Branded or Generic? The First Decision

Every tech gifting conversation comes down to this, and nobody lays out the trade-off clearly.

Branded products — boAt, Noise, Portronics, JBL and similar — carry instant perceived value. The recipient recognises the name and knows roughly what it costs. But you can generally only brand the packaging and the gift box, not the product itself.

Generic or white-label products cost considerably less at the same specification, and your logo goes directly on the device — which is where the daily brand exposure comes from. The trade-off is that perceived value depends entirely on how good the product actually is.

A practical split many companies use: branded products for clients and senior gifting, where perceived value does the work; vetted generic products for the wider team, where your logo on the device gives you daily visibility at a workable cost.

Whichever you choose, the quality checks below matter — they matter more with generic, but branded stock can be counterfeit too.

Power Banks: What to Verify

Power banks are the most-ordered tech gift in India and the one where failures are most common. Four things to check before you commit.

Actual capacity, not labelled capacity. A power bank labelled 10,000 mAh should deliver roughly 6,000–6,500 mAh of usable output after conversion losses — that's normal and expected. What isn't normal is a labelled 10,000 mAh unit delivering 3,000. Ask whether capacity is tested on production samples, not just printed on the shell.

BIS certification. Power banks sold in India require BIS certification under mandatory registration. It covers safety — overcharge protection, short-circuit protection, thermal behaviour. Ask for the BIS registration number in writing. A supplier who can't produce it is selling you something you shouldn't hand to 200 employees.

Output wattage. "Fast charging" is not a specification. Ask for the actual output in watts. 15W or 18W is a genuine fast-charge; 5W is a standard charger with marketing on it.

Protection circuits. Overcharge, over-discharge, short-circuit and temperature protection. These are the features that prevent the failure nobody wants to explain to HR.

One branding note: logo placement shouldn't cover heat-dissipation areas on the casing. It's a small detail that a good supplier will flag and a careless one won't.

Wireless Earbuds: What to Check

Now the single most-gifted tech item in Indian corporate gifting, and worth a few specific questions.

Bluetooth version. 5.0 or above for stable pairing and lower battery drain. Older versions drop connections, which is the complaint you'll hear about.

Pairing reliability at volume. Ask whether random units from the production batch are tested for pairing. A failure rate in the low double digits across a bulk order is not unheard of with unvetted stock — and it's the kind of problem that surfaces a week after distribution.

Battery life, stated honestly. Ask for playback time per charge and total with the case, separately.

Case build and hinge. The charging case hinge is the most common physical failure point on cheap earbuds.

Warranty terms. Covered below — it matters more here than on almost any other gift.

Warranty and What Happens When Units Fail

The operational question nobody in this market addresses, and the one procurement teams should ask first.

With 200 units of anything electronic, some will fail. That's not pessimism, it's the nature of the category. The question is what happens next.

Ask before you order:

• Who handles a failed unit — the manufacturer, the supplier, or does it come back to your HR team?
• What is the warranty period, and does it start from delivery or from distribution? These are often months apart on festive orders.
• Is a service centre network involved, or is it a replacement-only arrangement?
• Are spares included? For a large order, asking for 2–3% spare units upfront is far easier than sourcing replacements three months later.

The realistic answer for most bulk tech gifting is that a small buffer of spare units, agreed at the time of order, solves the problem more cleanly than any warranty process. It costs very little and it means a failed unit gets replaced the same week rather than becoming an administrative task.

Shipping Batteries to Remote Employees

A practical constraint that catches out companies with distributed teams.

Lithium batteries have shipping restrictions. Power banks, earbuds and anything with a built-in battery can't be air-freighted freely, and several couriers restrict or refuse them on standard consumer services.

What this means:

• Multi-address dispatch of power banks takes longer than for non-battery items, and often goes by surface rather than air.
• Some pin codes are harder to serve for battery products than for regular gifts.
• Plan an extra week if you're sending tech items to individual home addresses.

If your festive timeline is already tight and your team is distributed, a non-battery tech item — a wireless charging pad, a cable organiser, a USB hub — ships far more easily and reaches everyone on time.
