Corporate gifting is usually one of the larger discretionary spends a company makes each year, and one of the least examined from a sustainability standpoint. It touches all three letters.
Environmental. Materials, packaging waste, transport emissions, and whether the item ends up in use or in landfill. This is the most visible and the easiest to improve.
Social. Who made the product. Artisan clusters, women-led enterprises, NGO-linked production and rural craft communities all sit here โ and this is where gifting can genuinely move a number rather than just avoid harm.
Governance. Procurement transparency, supplier standards, and โ importantly โ not overstating what you've achieved. A sustainability claim that doesn't hold up is a governance problem, not a marketing one.
The practical point: a gifting programme designed with these three in mind costs roughly what an unexamined one costs. The difference is deciding six weeks earlier.
The section nobody in this market writes, and the one your sustainability team will care about most.
What is straightforwardly measurable and defensible:
| Claim | Why it holds up |
|---|---|
| "X kg of virgin plastic avoided in packaging" | Calculable from packaging weight and material |
| "X gifts sourced from artisan or women-led producers" | A simple count, verifiable against invoices |
| "X% of the programme used recycled or biodegradable materials" | Verifiable by product specification |
| "Zero single-use plastic in packaging" | Binary and checkable |
| "X plantable items distributed" | A count |
| "Sourced from X producer clusters across Y states" | Documented from your supply chain |
What to be careful with:
"Carbon neutral" or "net zero" gifting. These are specific terms with methodologies behind them. Unless you have an actual assessment and offsetting arrangement, don't use them.
"X trees planted." Only claim this if there's a documented planting arrangement with a verifiable partner. Seed paper distributed is not the same as trees grown โ the germination rate is nowhere near 100%.
"Eco-friendly." Not a regulated term and increasingly treated with scepticism. Specific claims โ "made from recycled PET," "FSC-certified paper" โ carry far more weight than a general one.
"Biodegradable." Ask under what conditions and over what timeframe. Many materials described this way require industrial composting that isn't available to your recipients.
The rule of thumb: claim what you can produce a document for. A modest, specific, verifiable claim is worth considerably more in a sustainability report than an impressive one that invites a question.
The most visible category in CSR-led gifting, and the one that communicates intent instantly.
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Seed paper cards and tags | Planted after use; grows herbs or flowers |
| Seed pens and pencils | The stub is planted once the pen is finished |
| Seed balls | Scattered rather than planted; good for event distribution |
| Grow kits | Tulsi, herbs, microgreens with soil and instructions |
| Desk plants and succulents | Living gift; genuine daily presence |
| Terracotta planters | Often artisan-made; pairs with grow kits |
| Plantable calendars and diaries | Whole product plantable at year end |
Two things that make plantable gifting work rather than just look good:
Include clear instructions. A seed paper card with no explanation gets thrown away like any other card. A short line โ what to plant it in, how deep, how long until it germinates โ is the difference between the gesture landing and not.
Match the seed to the season and region. Seeds distributed in the wrong month or the wrong climate simply don't grow, which quietly undermines the whole point. Tell us where and when you're distributing and we'll match accordingly.

This is where gifting stops being about avoiding harm and starts contributing something.
What's available through craft and artisan production:
What to ask for, if this is going into a report:
And one honest constraint: handcrafted means variation. Two terracotta bottles from the same batch will not be identical. For most companies that's the appeal; if your programme needs a hundred visually identical units, handcrafted is the wrong choice and it's better to know that at the enquiry stage.
The environmental impact of gifting is often as much about how it's done as what's inside the box.
Packaging. Kraft and recycled boxes, jute wraps, cloth pouches, paper shred, paper tape, seed paper tags. No shrink wrap, no plastic shred, no laminated finishes that can't be recycled.
Right-sizing. An oversized box is wasted material and wasted freight. Fitting the box to the contents cuts both.
Consolidated shipping. One delivery to an office beats fifty individual parcels on every environmental measure. Where multi-address dispatch is necessary, consolidating by region helps.
No over-ordering. Surplus gifts sitting in a storeroom are the least discussed waste in corporate gifting. Order to a confirmed count with a small spare buffer, not to a comfortable overestimate.
Reusable outer packaging. A jute bag or a cloth wrap that gets reused is packaging that doesn't become waste.
A sustainable gift only supports your positioning if the recipient understands what makes it sustainable. Most don't, unless you tell them.
What works:
What doesn't work:
Sustainable and artisan-led gifting runs on a different timeline from off-the-shelf products, and underestimating it is the most common reason companies abandon it.
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Requirement and shortlisting | A few days |
| Physical samples | Around 7โ10 days |
| Bulk production | 15โ25 days, longer for handcrafted |
| Delivery | 3โ5 days to major metros; longer elsewhere |
Allow eight to ten weeks for a CSR-led festive programme. Craft production doesn't compress the way factory output does โ a cluster of artisans has a fixed daily capacity, and pushing the timeline usually means either substituting the product or accepting quality variation.
Two other realities worth knowing: handcrafted and natural items can be more fragile in transit and need better outer packing, and at very large volumes, consistency across handcrafted units becomes genuinely hard to guarantee. For orders in the thousands, a hybrid approach โ artisan-made packaging around consistent manufactured products โ usually works better than fully handcrafted.

What is the difference between eco-friendly gifts and a sustainable gifting programme?
Eco-friendly gifts are products made from better materials. A programme covers sourcing, packaging, logistics, waste and what you can document afterwards. If you're choosing products, start with our eco-friendly gifts page.
What can we honestly claim in our sustainability report?
Claim what you can produce a document for โ plastic avoided by weight, number of items from artisan producers, percentage of recycled materials, plantable items distributed. Be careful with "carbon neutral," "net zero" and tree-planting figures unless you have a verified arrangement behind them.
Are plantable gifts actually effective?
They work when the seeds match the season and region and the recipient gets clear instructions. Without both, they're a nice gesture that doesn't grow. Also note that seed paper distributed is not the same as trees grown, so be careful how you count it.
Can gifting support our CSR objectives?
Yes, particularly on the social side โ sourcing from artisan clusters, women-led enterprises and community producers directs spend you were making anyway toward livelihoods. Ask for documentation on producers if it's going into a report.
Why do handcrafted gifts take longer?
Craft production has fixed daily capacity and doesn't compress like factory output. Allow eight to ten weeks for a festive CSR programme, including sampling.
Can handcrafted items work for very large orders?
Up to a point. At scale, visual consistency across handcrafted units gets hard to guarantee. For orders in the thousands, artisan-made packaging around consistent manufactured products usually works better than fully handcrafted.
How do we tell recipients what makes the gift sustainable?
A short insert card with two or three factual lines โ what it's made of and why it was chosen. Specific facts land better than general claims, and care instructions matter for plantable and natural items.
Does sustainable gifting cost more?
Materials often cost slightly more, and craft production can too. But right-sized packaging, consolidated shipping and ordering to an accurate count all reduce cost โ so a well-planned sustainable programme frequently lands close to an unexamined conventional one.
Can you provide documentation for our procurement or ESG team?
Tell us what your team needs at the enquiry stage โ material specifications, sourcing details, producer information โ and we'll confirm what we can supply for the products you're considering.
Tell us the quantity, the budget, and what your sustainability or CSR team is trying to achieve. We'll come back with a programme โ and we'll be straight about which claims it will and won't support.
