Board weight matters more than people expect. Thin board flexes, dents in transit and reads cheap the moment it's picked up. For anything premium, kappa board or a heavier GSB paper is worth the small extra cost.

Inner trays hold contents in place so nothing shifts. For hampers with several items, this is the difference between a curated box and a jumble.

Choosing the Right Box Size

The most common packaging mistake, and the easiest to avoid.

Too big and the contents shift, rattle and look sparse. The recipient opens it expecting more than they find.

Too small and items get crammed, the lid strains, and things arrive dented.

How to get it right:

1. Lay the items out in the arrangement you want before choosing a box.
2. Measure the full footprint, then add roughly 2–3 cm on each side for filler.
3. Measure the tallest item and add about 1–2 cm of clearance.
4. Fill the gaps properly — paper shred, cloth wrap or a fitted tray. Empty space is what makes a good hamper look thin.
5. Check the weight if it's being couriered. A heavy box in flimsy board will fail.

Packaging That Survives the Courier

The gap most gifting goes wrong in, and something almost no packaging supplier mentions.

A presentation box is not a shipping box. A beautiful rigid box with your logo on it is designed to be looked at, not thrown around a sorting hub. Sent on its own, it arrives with scuffed corners and dented edges — and the recipient's first impression is damage.

What you actually need:

• An outer corrugated carton around the presentation box. The pretty box stays pristine; the plain one takes the beating.
• Void fill between the two — even a centimetre of cushioning prevents most corner damage.
• Fragile items wrapped individually, not just packed together in a tray.
• No liquids or glass for outstation delivery unless properly protected. This is the single most common cause of a ruined gift.
• Labels on the outer carton only. Nothing stuck directly to the presentation box.

For local hand-delivery, the presentation box alone is fine. For anything going by courier, plan the outer carton into the budget from the start rather than discovering the problem after the first complaint.

Branding Your Packaging

Packaging is often the highest-impact place to put your brand — more visible than a logo on a product inside.

• Printed boxes in your brand colours, with logo placement of your choice
• Foil stamping for a premium logo treatment
• Branded sleeves wrapped around a plain box — the most cost-effective option by far
• Custom stickers and seals — cheapest branding, and surprisingly effective
• Printed ribbons with your company name
• Custom cards and tags carrying your message

If your budget is tight, a branded sleeve on a plain box gives you 80% of the effect at a fraction of the cost of fully printed boxes.

How Much of Your Budget Should Packaging Be?

Nobody states a number, so here's a workable one: roughly 10–20% of the total gift value.

Below 10% and the packaging tends to undersell the contents. A good product in a flimsy box reads as an afterthought, and the whole gift feels cheaper than it was.

Above 20% and you're spending on the wrapper rather than the gift. It shows, particularly when the box is more impressive than what's inside.

Two adjustments worth making:

• Client gifting justifies going higher, because presentation is doing more of the work.
• High-volume employee gifting usually goes lower, because a branded sleeve on a kraft box at ₹40 across 500 pieces is a materially different decision than at 20 pieces.

• Kraft and recycled boards rather than laminated or plastic-coated
• Jute wraps and cloth pouches the recipient reuses

• Seed paper tags — plantable, so the tag outlives the box
• Paper tape and jute twine rather than plastic tape and synthetic ribbon
• No shrink wrap — the clearest giveaway that a gift isn't as green as it claims

What can be customised: size and shape, board weight, material, print, finish, inner tray layout, sleeve, ribbon, tag and insert card.

Ask for a sample. For any large quantity, one physical box in hand tells you more than any digital mockup — particularly on board weight and finish, which don't translate to a screen.

What is a rigid gift box?
A box built on kappa board and wrapped in printed paper. It doesn't flex or collapse, which is why it's the standard for premium and corporate gifting. It's also the format most people associate with a quality unboxing.

How do I choose the right box size for a hamper?
