The single most important thing on this page, and something almost nobody selling bottles in India will bring up unprompted.

Stainless steel comes in grades, and two of them dominate the bottle market.

SS 304 is food-grade steel — corrosion resistant, doesn't leach, doesn't affect taste, and holds up for years. This is what a bottle you intend someone to drink from daily should be made of.

SS 202 is a cheaper grade with lower chromium and nickel content. It's more prone to rust and pitting, particularly at the base and around the weld, and it is not the appropriate grade for long-term drinking water storage. It is common in the low-cost end of the Indian bottle market precisely because it's cheaper.

What to do about it:

• Ask for the grade in writing on any bulk quote. "Stainless steel" on its own tells you nothing.
• Check the inner wall specifically. Some bottles are 304 outside and a cheaper grade inside — which is the side that matters.
• Be suspicious of unusually low pricing. If an insulated steel bottle is priced far below the rest of the market, the grade is usually where the saving came from.

Every steel bottle we quote for corporate orders is specified by grade. If you're comparing quotes from multiple vendors, this is the single question that will explain most of the price difference.

BIS Certification

IS 17526:2021 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for stainless steel vacuum-insulated bottles and flasks. It covers construction, material safety and insulation performance.

It isn't mandatory across the board, which is exactly why it's a useful signal — a manufacturer who has certified to it has been tested against a standard rather than simply making claims.

For corporate orders, particularly large ones or anything going to clients, ask whether the bottles are BIS certified. It's a straightforward question, and a vendor who can answer it clearly is telling you something about the rest of their supply chain too.

Does the Insulation Actually Work?

"Hot and cold for 24 hours" appears on nearly every insulated bottle sold in India. Some of them mean it.

How genuine vacuum insulation behaves:

• The outside stays at room temperature even with boiling water inside. If the exterior warms up, the vacuum is weak or absent.
• There's no condensation on the outside with ice water in it. Sweating means heat is transferring.
• It feels lighter than it looks — a vacuum gap weighs nothing, so the bottle is hollow-feeling for its size.

What reduces the stated hours, even on a good bottle:

• Partial fills. A half-empty bottle loses temperature far faster. The 24-hour figure assumes it's full.
• Frequent opening. Every time it's opened, the temperature resets.
• Straw and sip lids. These lose heat considerably faster than a sealed screw cap.
• Starting temperature. Pre-warming or pre-chilling the bottle for a minute before filling makes a real difference.

If insulation genuinely matters for your recipients — field teams, drivers, people commuting long distances — ask for a sample and test it. Fill it with boiling water in the morning and check the exterior temperature. That two-minute test tells you more than any spec sheet.

Narrow Mouth or Wide Mouth?

A small decision that people notice daily, and one nobody mentions before a bulk order.

Narrow mouth pours cleanly and is easier to drink from while walking or driving. It's the better choice for a general office team.

Wide mouth takes ice cubes, fits a bottle brush for proper cleaning, and is easier to fill from a water cooler. It's the better choice for gym users, field teams, and anyone putting anything other than water in it.

The cleaning point is the one that matters most. A narrow-mouth bottle is genuinely hard to clean properly, and a bottle that can't be cleaned gets abandoned. If you're gifting bottles you want still in use next year, wide mouth or a removable lid assembly is worth choosing.

Choosing the Right Capacity

For a company-wide order, 750 ml is the safest single choice — enough to be genuinely useful, still fits a bag and a car cup holder.

Two things worth checking before a bulk order: whether it fits a standard cup holder if people drive, and the weight when full. An insulated 1 L steel bottle full of water is heavier than most people expect, and heavy bottles get left at home.

Branding

A bottle gets washed daily, so branding durability matters more here than on most gifts. A printed logo that has half worn away by month eight is actively worse for your brand than no logo.

For long-term team gifting, laser engraving on steel is the right answer. Powder-coated bottles with engraving are particularly effective — the engraved area shows the bare steel underneath, giving a two-tone effect without any ink at all.

Ask for a mockup on every order and a physical sample for large quantities. Engraving contrast on different finishes doesn't translate accurately to a screen.

Individual Names, Not Just Logos

Worth considering, because the cost difference is small and the difference in reception isn't.

A bottle with your company logo is a company bottle. A bottle with the person's name engraved on it is theirs. In an onboarding kit especially, a named bottle signals that someone was expected rather than processed.

Practically, it also solves the office problem of six identical bottles in a shared kitchen.
